Air India Flight AI-171 Disaster: One Survivor

241 individuals on board the flight perished in the crash, while only 1 survived

Ahmedabad, India – A horrific aviation disaster struck Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, as Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The devastating incident claimed the lives of 241 of the 242 people on board and at least five individuals on the ground, leaving a nation in shock and a lone survivor with a harrowing tale.

The aircraft, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, went down in a residential area of Ahmedabad, specifically crashing into a medical college hostel in the Meghaninagar area. Eyewitnesses reported the plane struggling to gain altitude shortly after its 1:38 PM local time departure, followed by a mayday call from the pilot before all communication ceased. The impact resulted in a massive fireball and widespread debris, causing extensive damage to the hostel building.

Heavy Toll and Investigation Underway
Authorities have confirmed that 241 individuals on board the flight perished in the crash. Among the victims was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose death has sent ripples of grief across the political landscape. On the ground, at least five medical students who were in the hostel’s dining area were also tragically killed, with reports indicating a total of eight local casualties. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were immediately mobilized, working through the charred wreckage to recover bodies and search for any other potential survivors.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has initiated a full probe into the cause of the crash. Crucially, the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly known as the black box, has been recovered from the rooftop of a building at the crash site. Its analysis is expected to provide vital clues regarding the final moments of the flight, including speed, altitude, and flight control inputs, which are essential for reconstructing the sequence of events that led to this catastrophic accident. This marks the first fatal crash for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner model since its commercial service began.

A Miraculous Escape: The Lone Survivor’s Account
In a truly astonishing turn of events, one passenger, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin and businessman based in the UK, miraculously survived the crash. Seated in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit, Ramesh was reportedly thrown from the aircraft upon impact. Dazed and suffering from multiple injuries, including burns, he managed to escape through a broken door and walk to a waiting ambulance.

Speaking from his hospital bed at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Ramesh expressed profound disbelief at his survival. “I still can’t believe I survived,” he told reporters, recounting how he thought he “was also going to die.” He described the plane struggling immediately after takeoff, a green and white light illuminating the cabin, and the pilot attempting to push the aircraft forward before it violently struck the building. Ramesh recalled seeing space to escape when the door broke and instinctively jumping out. He recounted the horrific scene around him, stating, “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ramesh at the hospital, extending his condolences and support. The survivor also revealed the heartbreaking news that his brother, Ajay, who was seated in a different row on the same flight, was missing.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding what led to this tragic loss of life and providing support to the grieving families affected by one of India’s worst aviation disasters in recent memory.
