Islamabad Sizzles at 45°C

One of the Hottest Days on Record

Islamabad – Islamabad experienced one of its hottest days in history on Wednesday 11th June, 2025, as the mercury soared to a scorching 45°C. This extreme temperature pushed the federal capital to its limits, coming remarkably close to the all-time record of 46.6°C, which was set on June 21, 1994.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed the unprecedented heat, leaving residents grappling with the intense conditions. Daily life was significantly impacted, with people urged to stay indoors and hydrated. The heatwave also prompted health warnings, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Adding to the day’s challenges, a fire broke out in the Margalla Hills, a popular recreational area. The blaze, which started in a forested patch, spread rapidly due to the prevailing dry weather and strong winds. The Islamabad district administration responded swiftly, deploying over 50 firefighters to contain the inferno. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, dry conditions and potential human negligence are suspected. Authorities have since imposed Section 144 across the Margalla Hills National Park, banning bonfires, barbecues, and other fire-related activities to mitigate future risks.

The extreme heat underscores growing concerns about climate change in the region. Experts are calling for increased tree planting initiatives and water conservation efforts to combat rising temperatures and the increasing frequency of heatwaves. The prolonged periods of intense heat also highlight the need for robust urban planning that prioritizes green spaces and efficient resource management.

While the immediate outlook remains hot, the PMD has offered a glimmer of hope, forecasting the possibility of rain in the coming days, which could provide much-needed respite from the relentless heat. Until then, residents are advised to remain vigilant, take all necessary precautions, and stay informed about official weather advisories.
